As the crucifix is a visual depiction of John 3:16, what is wrong with it as religious art?

Protestants put up religious art during holidays, etc. Catholics choose to do it all year long, as there form of ministry. I am sure seeing a reminder of the suffering of Christ would make some unable to go have a happy lunch, which is possible when only focusing on the resurrection.
