You can go looking for a good donor engine from another 04 Cherokee/Grand Cherokee, which should cost a lot less than 6k. Sounds like they're trying to sell you a rebuilt engine. While this will give you the best warranty, if you're struggling for money, a good, used engine should last a good couple of years, and there are places that will sell and engine with at least a year warranty.
