Is it true that "Mississippi Burning" is mainly rated R for graphic violence?

Well, they do show a scene where a black man is castrated. Looking at it that way, I think it's good that it got an R rating.... it shows the severity of life in the South and how horrible it was for African-Americans living in the South at that time.
