Is it appropriate for a Phycologist to want to only speak with the mom not the father?

My 11 year old son sees a phycologist mainly due to communication issues with other children. Today I offered to drive him and my wife said that the Dr. only wanted to speak with the mom because it was her experience that men did not give her an accurate depiction of what was going on. I found it a bit offensive and felt that my wife would understand if a male Dr. said the opposite. Am I being too sensitive?
